The Compton Initiative-
Its 530am on a saturday morning and my alarm chimes. Not very many things would part me from my precious slumber, but today I was to make the journey down to Compton in Los Angeles to join 1600 other blurry eyed people.
The venue, Martin Luther King Elementary School. The Reason, The Compton Initiative.
The Compton Initiative is a long term commitment to bring restoration and hope to the community of Compton. Every 3 months, volunteers meet to paint and maintain a school and several houses in the area.
Todays task was mammoth, but armed with rollers, paint brushes and some fun colored blue paint we all set to work.
The exterior walls of the school were designated to different groups. I truly thought this was going to take us all day, but i guess the saying, many hands make light work, rings true! In less than 3 hours we saw the whole building transform. Taking something that was a dingy brown to a vibrant blue. The space looked cleaner and more inviting. There was even a few murals thrown in, one featuring the schools name sake, Martin Luther King.
My biggest take away from the event, was just feeling a sense of pride in my community. It was remarkable to see all these people dedicate their morning to help transform this school. To remind the children that they are cared about and making their school a more pleasant place to attend.
I urge you to get involved with this fantastic initiative. If you’re local to LA, come help out, or you can always make a donation. Visit their website justdogood.com
