Recipe: Turmeric Milk


Ahh im snug as a bug in a rug! (or so my mother used to say to me as she tucked me in at night). I have a new favorite bed time drink, it warms my soul, its comforting, relaxing and soothes me to sleep, and it so unbelievably good for you I had to share!
Turmeric, if you don't know it or use it, its time to get familiar! This little spice may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Some of you will recognize its smell and color from indian curries, but its uses are far more wide reaching than that. Turmeric boasts a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, its commonly referred to as the "queen of spices". It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients.

This savvy little spice is best known for its potent natural anti-inflammatory properties that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects. It can be used as a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. And trust me, with western living, we all need a good dose of this anti-inflammatory in our lives.
Plus, this recipe has a bunch of cinnamon thrown into the mix! Cinnamon was once valued higher than gold, and for good reason, it can be used to treat things such as colds, indigestion and cramps and also believed to improve energy, vitality and circulation. However, limit yourself to a sprinkle or pinch here and there, as very large doses can be toxic for you.

So, how do you make this magic milk? Its super simple:
2 cups of almond milk or coconut milk (the fat help the turmeric absorption)
1 tablespoon raw honey
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
fresh grated ginger
2 or 3 whole black peppercorns (unfortunately turmeric is poorly absorbed into the blood stream, black pepper actually aids in absorption. I swallow them whole with this drink)

Mix it all together in a saucepan till its warm, and strain out any large cinnamon sticks or ginger if necessary.
