Recipe: Holy Guacamole!-
Ahhh-vocados! You super little food, you!
These green beauties are so gosh damn good for us, studies even show that avocado-eaters are healthier overall than those who skip it. We should feel justified in our love-affair with the green fruit.
Avocados are so nutrient dense, would you believe that they are considered by many nutritional experts to be a perfect food? Holy Guacamole indeed!
Although avocados are heavy in calories, never fear, these are the good for you kinda calories, and the fats are heart healthy monounsaturated fats and omega-3. In fact, adding avocados to your diet can increase HDL and decrease triglycerides. Avocados have the highest protein content of any fruit, and twice the potassium of a banana!
Here are some health benefits from munching on these gorgeous greens:
Stabilize blood sugar levels
Help with weight loss
Wide-ranging anti-inflammatory benefits
Optimized absorption of carotenoids
Anti cancer benefits
Excellent as a first baby food
Good for your heart
Perfect for at home beauty treatments
There are many ways to enjoy avocado, mixing into salads, using it as a meat substitute for sandwiches, adding it to smoothies for a more creamy taste and using it to make healthy ice-cream. The list is endless!
But I'm a purist at heart, so for me, its all about the guacamole. Im always so surprised by the added ingredients by store bought guacamole. Lets keep things simple people! All you need for some kick ass guac is:
finely chopped cilantro
salt and pepper to taste
chilli pepper finely chopped to taste (because i like it spicy)
Mush it all together and hey presto the yummiest guacamole guaranteed.
Oh and here's a little tip for you all: Once an avocado is picked, it takes between 7 and 10 days to ripen. Keeping it in the refrigerator will slow down the ripening process, while putting it in a paper bag with a ripe apple will speed up the process.
